Nothing is Permanent 2017
Nothing is Permanent is an old problematic Art History Book (The Story of Art by E.H. Gombrich) that has been reworked with permanent marker. It is a book that in multiple ways reflects the kinds of foundations that our histories are based upon; that is the narrow perspective of the cis white-male: racist, sexist and honestly just boring. Of course this statement is not intended to offend all white cis men; I am working here with a trope and human beings are not as simple as a trope; there does indeed exist the kind of white man that is self-checking and consciously unlearning; to those who are, I salute you. I too am in a process of unlearning. This project is just part of that process.
The reworking of the book makes use of a kind of censoring that calls for new ways of seeing. It calls for the inclusivity of the voices of women, LGBTQ and cultures that have been traditionally viewed as outside of the global West. Some pages act as an incantation for a call to awakening, or what it is that I wish to see in the world. Some pages simply make a comment about society as it is reflected in this kind of knowledge system. Where the art of non-european cultures have appeared, I have only defaced the words; the images have been left to stand alone; it is not my place to touch them. In the cases where artifacts of these cultures reside in the museums of the West I have edited the text claiming this ownership.
Below are just some pages of a 350 page book. This project was realised while I was in my third year at Michaelis at the time when protests broke out in relation to the #Feesmustfall movement. When the campus was shut down, I dropped all the work that I had been working on the whole year and focused upon this project because I felt it was relevant to the decolonial conversation.
